Taking Back Sunday Kicks Off New Tour, Debuts Retweaked Setlist

By jonathan - Posted on 14 October 2013

Taking Back Sunday kicked off its new tour in upstate New York a couple nights ago, and with it a highly retweaked setlist. Since the original line-up got back together, Taking Back Sunday has heavily relied on reliable hits from Where You Want to Be (Set Phasers to Stun, A Decade Under the Influence, One-Eighty By Summer), Louder Now (What's it Feel Like to Be a Ghost?, Liar, MakeDamnSure, Error Operator), and its new self-titled album (El Paso, Faith, and sometimes other songs such as Best Places to Be a Mom, This Is All Now, You Got Me) and filled out the rest of the setlist with a large number of songs, or even every song, from Tell All Your Friends.

With the 10th anniversary of Tell All Your Friends now in the past, the band is keeping most of the songs mentioned above in the setlist but is now limiting its selection of songs from Tell All Your Friends to a select number of hits (You're So Last Summer, Cute Without the E, Timberwolves at New Jersey, You're So Last Summer). To out the rest of the setlist, the band is reviving some "long lost" tracks from Where You Want to Be, Louder Now, and even New Again (!).

The first few nights of a new tour tend to be an experimental phase, so the first two nights of the tour thus far feature significant differences. In the first night, the band played Bonus Moshpit Pt. II and Number Five with a Bullet from Where You Want to Be, My Blue Heaven from Louder Now, Lonely Lonely and Catholic Knees from New Again, Call Me in the Morning from its self-titled album, and the brand new tracks Flicker Fade and Beat Up Car. The next night, the band axed Lonely Lonely and Set Phasers to Stun and added Slowdance on the Inside from Where You Want to Be and Twenty Twenty Surgery from Louder Now.

I didn't attend these shows, but I'm presenting the setlists as posted on setlist.fm below:

My two cents: Overall, these seem like great additions; fans have been clamoring for many of these songs for years. I was personally excited to see the band dip back into New Again (although I was sad to see Lonely Lonely chopped off the second night), and I hope Twenty Twenty Surgery makes a return on future nights (I've never seen them play the song, and I always wondered why they didn't play it more).

Also, the song I'd most like to see the band revive: Miami.

I'll post new updates on the tour if the setlist differs drastically from here on out, because I'm nerdy like that.
